At the age of nine he was already taking private lessons, at the age of fourteen he started his studies at the art academy. He made several study trips and in Paris Krøyer followed a private course with Léon Bonnat. Still, his main sources of inspiration were the Impressionists of the time. Over the years, he painted a lot in a cottage in Skagen, Denmark. At the time, his wife posed for him many times. Krøyer died at the age of 58 after a difficult last period.
